The harbour
Kota Kinabalu is the capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. Formerly called Jesselton, it was largely destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards.
Its port handles general cargo, containers and palm oil, with a container terminal at nearby Sepanggar Bay, and it is a starting point for boats to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, just offshore. Sailors approaching on a clear morning can see Mount Kinabalu, one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia, towering inland above the coast.
