The harbour
Port Blair, officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in 2024, is the capital of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It lies on a sheltered harbour on South Andaman Island, facing the Andaman Sea.
It was a British penal colony, and the Cellular Jail, where Indian independence activists were held, is now a national memorial. Passenger ships link the town with Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam, and it is the headquarters of India's tri-service Andaman and Nicobar Command.
Sailors enter past Ross Island, the old British administrative centre, now covered in ruins and forest, among clear water and coral reefs.
