The harbour
Visakhapatnam lies on the east coast of India, in Andhra Pradesh, facing the Bay of Bengal. Its natural harbour is sheltered by a rocky headland called the Dolphin's Nose, and the port is one of India's important cargo ports, handling iron ore, coal, oil and containers.
The city is the headquarters of the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command and has a large shipyard and steel plant. On the beach stands INS Kursura, a former navy submarine now a museum. Sailors entering the harbour pass close under the Dolphin's Nose, with its lighthouse, and must take the north-east and south-west monsoon seasons into account.
