The harbour
Malé is the capital of the Maldives, a small, densely built island on the southern edge of North Malé Atoll in the Indian Ocean. Almost every part of the island is covered by buildings, and it is linked by bridge to the airport island of Hulhulé.
Because the Maldives produces little besides fish and tourism services, the port handles nearly all of the country's imported food, fuel and goods. Fishing, especially for tuna, has long been central to island life. Sailors here must navigate carefully among coral reefs and atoll channels, and the harbour is busy with dhonis, the traditional Maldivian boats used for transport.
