The harbour
Mumbai lies on India's west coast, on the Arabian Sea, around one of the finest natural harbours in South Asia. The older Mumbai Port lines the city side of the harbour, while Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, on the mainland shore opposite, handles a large share of India's container trade.
The harbour also handles oil, bulk cargo, ferries and cruise ships. The Gateway of India, built during British rule, stands on the waterfront, and Elephanta Island with its ancient rock-cut caves lies in the harbour. Sailors notice the dramatic change of the southwest monsoon, which brings heavy rain and rough seas in summer.
