The harbour
Djibouti City sits on the Gulf of Tadjoura near the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, the narrow southern entrance to the Red Sea and one of the world's key shipping chokepoints.
The port is the main sea gateway for landlocked Ethiopia, linked to Addis Ababa by railway, and its Doraleh terminals handle containers, fuel and bulk cargo. Because of its strategic position, several foreign countries, including France, the United States and China, keep military bases here.
The first thing a sailor notices is the heat: Djibouti is among the hottest port cities anywhere, with dry, barren volcanic hills around the gulf.
