Salalah
Oman · Persian Gulf
The harbour
Salalah lies on the Arabian Sea coast in Dhofar, the southernmost region of Oman, far from the Persian Gulf itself.
Its deepwater port at Raysut, just west of the city, is a major container transshipment hub on the routes between Asia, the Middle East, Europe and East Africa, and it also handles bulk cargo. For millennia this coast exported frankincense, and the ruins of the old trading port of Al-Baleed are a World Heritage Site.
From roughly June to September the khareef monsoon brings mist, drizzle and green hills, and a sailor meets heavy southwest swell offshore.
