Port Sudan
Sudan · Red Sea & Suez
The harbour
Port Sudan is Sudan's main seaport, on the western shore of the Red Sea.
The British built it in the early twentieth century to replace the old coral-stone port of Suakin to the south, whose harbour was too small for modern ships. It handles most of the country's trade, including imports of fuel and food and exports of livestock and agricultural goods, and a pipeline brings oil to a nearby terminal. Since the outbreak of war in 2023 it has also served as a seat of government.
Offshore lie fine coral reefs, so a sailor must keep to the marked channels.
