Jeddah
Saudi Arabia · Red Sea & Suez
The harbour
Jeddah lies on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, about midway along the sea's length. For centuries it has been the main sea gateway for pilgrims travelling to Mecca, and its old quarter, Al-Balad, with tall houses built of coral stone and carved wooden balconies, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jeddah Islamic Port is the country's largest commercial port, handling containers, general cargo and transshipment on the route between Asia and Europe via Suez. Sailors must navigate carefully around the coral reefs that fringe the coast, and may see King Fahd's Fountain, which jets water high above the waterfront.
