The harbour
Mombasa is Kenya's main seaport, built partly on an island on the Indian Ocean coast. Its deep-water harbour, Kilindini, handles containers, fuel and general cargo not only for Kenya but also for landlocked neighbours such as Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.
For centuries Mombasa was a Swahili trading town linked to Arabia and India by dhows sailing with the monsoon winds. The Portuguese built Fort Jesus here in the 1590s, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the Old Port. Sailors notice the coral reefs offshore, the narrow entrance channels and the seasonal monsoon wind shifts.
