The harbour
Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, lies on Maputo Bay, formerly called Delagoa Bay, on the Indian Ocean. Under Portuguese rule the city was called Lourenço Marques.
Rail lines link the port to South Africa, Eswatini and Zimbabwe, so much of its traffic is transit cargo: coal, chrome, magnetite, sugar and citrus fruit from inland, along with containers and imports.
The bay is wide but shallow, so ships follow a long dredged channel to the city. Sailors pass Inhaca Island at the bay's edge, and see the long Maputo–Katembe suspension bridge spanning the harbour.
