The harbour
Durban lies on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa, in KwaZulu-Natal, around a natural harbour once called the Bay of Natal. The name Natal goes back to Vasco da Gama, who sighted this coast around Christmas on his voyage to India.
Durban is one of the busiest ports in Africa, handling containers, cars, fuel, sugar and other bulk goods for South Africa's industrial heartland around Johannesburg. The harbour is sheltered by the high wooded ridge of the Bluff. Ships enter through a fairly narrow channel beside the city's beaches, often rolling in the long Indian Ocean swell just before reaching calm water.
