Gqeberha
South Africa · Cape of Good Hope
The harbour
Gqeberha, known until 2021 as Port Elizabeth, lies on Algoa Bay on South Africa's Eastern Cape coast, facing the Indian Ocean.
The port handles containers, vehicle exports from the region's car factories, citrus fruit and manganese ore. A newer deepwater port, Ngqura, was built a short distance up the bay to take larger ships.
The city is known for its beaches and as the 'Windy City'. Algoa Bay is open to the southeast and can be rough, and a sailor may see African penguins on the small islands of the bay, as well as dolphins and whales in season.
