The harbour
Toamasina, formerly known as Tamatave, lies on the east coast of Madagascar facing the Indian Ocean. It is the island's main port and handles the great majority of its foreign trade, including containers, fuel and exports such as vanilla, cloves and minerals, including nickel and cobalt from a large inland mining project.
The town is linked to the capital, Antananarivo, by road and railway. A coral reef helps shelter the harbour from the open ocean. Sailors calling here must keep a careful watch on the weather in the southern summer, when tropical cyclones regularly strike this coast.
