The harbour
Port Louis is the capital and main port of Mauritius, on the island's north-west coast in the Indian Ocean. It was founded by the French in the eighteenth century under Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais and later became a British colonial port.
The harbour handles containers and transhipment cargo, sugar exports and fuel, and it is a base for tuna fishing and processing. A freeport zone and the Caudan Waterfront lie beside the docks. Ships approach through a gap in the coral reef, and sailors see a dramatic ring of jagged mountains, including Le Pouce and Pieter Both, rising behind the city.
