Freetown
Sierra Leone · West Africa
The harbour
Freetown lies on the south side of the Sierra Leone River estuary, one of the largest natural harbours in Africa. It was founded in the late eighteenth century as a settlement for freed and formerly enslaved people from Britain and Nova Scotia.
The Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron used it as a base against the slave trade, and in the Second World War it was a key convoy port. Today its Queen Elizabeth II Quay handles containers, fuel and imports.
Sailors see green hills rising behind the city; their shape is said to have given the country its Portuguese name, Serra Leoa, the Lion Mountains.
