The harbour

Conakry, the capital of Guinea, sits on the narrow Kaloum Peninsula projecting into the Atlantic. The old city was built on Tombo Island, which is now joined to the mainland.

The port is Guinea's main entry point for imported food, fuel and manufactured goods, and handles containers and general cargo. The country is rich in bauxite, the ore of aluminium, though most of it is shipped from other terminals further up the coast.

Sailors approaching the harbour pass the Îles de Loos, a small group of green islands lying just off the peninsula.
