The harbour
Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, lies on the Atlantic coast where the Sahara meets the sea. It was a small village until it was chosen as the capital around the time of independence and built up from the late 1950s.
Its deepwater port, the Port de l'Amitié, was built with Chinese aid and handles most of the country's imports, including food and fuel. The waters offshore are rich in fish, and the beach fish market, with its brightly painted wooden pirogues, is one of the city's best-known sights.
A sailor sees a low, sandy coast and often haze from wind-blown desert dust.
