The harbour
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria lies on the northeast coast of Gran Canaria in Spain's Canary Islands, in the Atlantic off northwest Africa. Its harbour, the Puerto de la Luz, has long been a stopping point for ships crossing between Europe, Africa and the Americas; Columbus called in the Canaries on his first voyage in 1492.
Today it is one of Spain's busiest ports, handling containers, transshipment, fuel bunkering, fishing fleets, ship repair and cruise passengers. Every autumn it is the starting point for a large transatlantic sailing rally. Sailors notice the steady northeasterly trade winds and the busy anchorage outside the breakwater.
