The harbour
Dakar, the capital of Senegal, sits on the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Africa, facing the Atlantic. Its sheltered harbour on the southeast side of the peninsula has long been a key stop for ships sailing along West Africa.
The port handles containers, general cargo, fuel and large catches of tuna and other fish, and serves landlocked Mali by road and rail. Just offshore lies Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site remembered for its role in the Atlantic slave trade. Sailors notice the cool, dusty harmattan winds in winter and the busy fleets of painted wooden fishing pirogues.
