The harbour
Monrovia, Liberia's capital, lies on Cape Mesurado at the mouth of the Mesurado River, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa.
It was founded in 1822 as a settlement for freed African Americans and named after US President James Monroe. The Freeport of Monrovia is the country's main port, shipping rubber, iron ore and timber and receiving most of Liberia's imports. The country also runs one of the world's largest ship registries, so the Liberian flag is seen on vessels everywhere.
A sailor approaching sees the cape's headland and lighthouse marking the entrance.
