The harbour
The Port of Alaska at Anchorage sits at the head of Cook Inlet, where Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm meet. It grew up with the building of the Alaska Railroad and today brings in most of the food, fuel and goods used by the state's population.
Container ships and tankers arrive on regular runs from the Pacific Northwest, and the port also supports military bases nearby.
Cook Inlet has one of the largest tidal ranges in North America. Sailors must deal with fast currents, wide grey mudflats exposed at low water and, in winter, drifting ice, with the Chugach Mountains behind the city.
