The harbour
Vancouver lies on Burrard Inlet in British Columbia, near the Strait of Georgia and the Pacific Ocean. It is Canada's largest port and its main gateway to Asia, handling containers, grain, coal, potash, sulphur and timber products brought by rail from across western Canada.
It is also a major home port for cruise ships sailing to Alaska. Ships enter Burrard Inlet through the First Narrows beneath the Lions Gate Bridge, beside the forest of Stanley Park, where tidal currents run strongly. Sailors also notice the North Shore Mountains rising above the harbour and seaplanes taking off from Coal Harbour.
