The harbour
San Diego lies on San Diego Bay in southern California, close to the Mexican border. The bay is sheltered from the Pacific by Point Loma and the Coronado peninsula, making it one of the best natural harbours on the US West Coast.
It is a major base for the US Navy's Pacific Fleet, with aircraft carriers often berthed at North Island. The port also handles cruise ships, vehicles and general cargo, and has a long history of tuna fishing. The aircraft carrier USS Midway is moored downtown as a museum. Sailors notice the mild, sunny climate and the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.
