The harbour
Manzanillo, in the state of Colima, lies on Mexico's Pacific coast around two bays, Manzanillo Bay and Santiago Bay. Its port is the busiest container port in Mexico and the main gateway for trade with Asia, linked by road and rail to Guadalajara and Mexico City.
The port also handles bulk cargo, minerals and fuel, and the area has a beach tourism trade. Manzanillo calls itself a sailfish capital because of sport fishing offshore, and a large sailfish sculpture stands on the waterfront. Sailors approaching the port see wooded hills enclosing the bays and lines of container ships at anchor.
