The harbour
Acajutla is El Salvador's main seaport, on the country's Pacific coast in the department of Sonsonate, west of San Salvador. It handles much of the nation's seaborne trade, including coffee and sugar exports, general cargo, bulk goods and fuel imports.
The port is built around long piers reaching out from an open coastline rather than a deep natural bay, so ships lie exposed to the Pacific swell. Sailors arriving here notice the steady rollers that also make the nearby black-sand beaches popular with surfers, and the volcanic hills rising inland.
