The harbour
Corinto is Nicaragua's main seaport, on the Pacific coast in the north-west of the country. The town stands on low ground beside a sheltered natural harbour formed by islands and estuaries, which allows ocean-going ships to berth close to shore.
The port handles much of Nicaragua's foreign trade, shipping out farm products such as coffee and sugar and taking in fuel and manufactured goods. In 1984 its harbour was mined during the conflict involving the Contras, which led to a case at the International Court of Justice. On clear days sailors can see the volcanoes of the Maribios range rising inland.
