Puerto Quetzal
Guatemala · North Pacific
The harbour
Puerto Quetzal is Guatemala's main Pacific port, in the department of Escuintla near the older port of San José. It is an artificial harbour protected by breakwaters on an open, straight coastline.
The port exports sugar and other agricultural products and handles containers, fuel and bulk cargo. Cruise ships also call, with passengers travelling inland to Antigua Guatemala and Guatemala City.
Sailors arriving see the dark volcanic sand beaches of the Pacific coast and, inland on clear days, the peaks of volcanoes such as Agua and Fuego. Long ocean swell rolls onto the shore, making the breakwaters essential.
