Puerto Cortés
Honduras · Caribbean & Panama
The harbour
Puerto Cortés lies on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, on the Gulf of Honduras, close to the borders of Guatemala and Belize.
It has a deep, naturally sheltered bay and is one of the largest and busiest ports in Central America, handling containers, fuel and bulk cargo. It is Honduras's main export outlet, especially for bananas, coffee, textiles and other goods, and it has good road links to San Pedro Sula, the country's industrial centre.
A short distance west stands the Spanish colonial fortress of Omoa, built to defend this coast against pirates and rival powers.
