The harbour
Progreso is the main port of the Yucatán Peninsula, on the Gulf of Mexico coast north of Mérida. It developed in the nineteenth century to export henequen, a sisal fibre that brought great wealth to the region.
Because the seabed is so shallow, the port is reached by an extremely long pier stretching several kilometres out to sea, one of the longest in the world. It handles cruise ships, containers, fuel and general cargo, and also supports a fishing fleet. Sailors notice the pale green, shallow water extending far offshore and the long, low, sandy coastline.
