Tampico
Mexico · Caribbean & Panama
The harbour
Tampico lies on the Pánuco River near its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico, in the state of Tamaulipas. In the early twentieth century it boomed as the centre of Mexico's first great oil fields, and oil remains important, with a refinery at neighbouring Ciudad Madero.
The port handles petroleum products, bulk cargo and general cargo, and the nearby port of Altamira handles much of the region's container and industrial traffic. The city is surrounded by lagoons and wetlands, and is known for its crab dishes. Sailors notice the river current, the flat coastal plain and the hot, humid climate.
