The harbour
Mobile, Alabama, stands where the Mobile River enters the head of Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the oldest cities on the Gulf Coast, founded by the French in the early eighteenth century, and claims the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States.
The port handles coal, steel, timber, containers and other cargo, and the city has active shipyards building naval and commercial vessels. The Battle of Mobile Bay was fought here in 1864, and the battleship USS Alabama is now a museum ship on the bay. Ships reach the port through a long dredged channel across the shallow bay.
