The harbour
Corpus Christi lies on Corpus Christi Bay on the Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico, sheltered from the open sea by the long barrier islands of Mustang and Padre. Ships reach it through a dredged channel entering at Port Aransas.
The port is a major energy hub, with refineries and terminals handling crude oil, refined products and liquefied natural gas, and it has become one of the leading US ports for crude oil exports. Sailors entering the bay notice the low, sandy islands, dolphins in the channel and the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, now a museum ship, moored on the waterfront.
