The harbour
The Port of Houston lies along the Houston Ship Channel, a long dredged waterway that runs from Galveston Bay on the Gulf of Mexico inland to the city, following the course of Buffalo Bayou. The channel opened to deep-sea ships in 1914.
It is one of the busiest ports in the United States, lined with refineries, petrochemical plants and terminals handling crude oil, chemicals, containers and bulk cargo. Sailors heading up the channel pass mile after mile of industrial plants and storage tanks, and the tall San Jacinto Monument, which marks the battle that won Texas independence.
