The harbour
Tampa lies at the head of Tampa Bay on Florida's west coast, opening onto the Gulf of Mexico. It is the largest port in Florida by cargo volume, handling fuel, phosphate fertiliser from Florida's mines, containers and building materials.
Cruise ships also sail from here to the Caribbean. The city's Ybor City district grew in the late nineteenth century around cigar factories run by Cuban and Spanish immigrants.
Sailors entering the bay pass under the high Sunshine Skyway Bridge and follow a long dredged channel through the shallow bay, where manatees are often seen in the warm water.
