The harbour
Jacksonville lies on the St. Johns River in northeast Florida, a short way upstream from where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Its port, JAXPORT, is one of the busiest vehicle-handling ports in the United States and also handles containers, with strong trade links to Puerto Rico. The river mouth is home to Naval Station Mayport, a major US Navy base.
The St. Johns is unusual in flowing north for much of its length. A sailor heading upriver passes under several large bridges and must allow for the tidal current, while the city's downtown rises right on the riverbanks.
