The harbour
Savannah lies on the Savannah River in Georgia, some distance upstream from the Atlantic Ocean. Founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733, the city is famous for its historic district of leafy squares.
Its port is one of the busiest container ports in the United States, serving the US Southeast and beyond. Large container ships travel up a long dredged channel and pass right beside the historic River Street waterfront on the way to the terminals upstream. Sailors notice how close the ships come to the city, the marshes along the river and the hot, humid summers.
