The harbour
Norfolk lies on Hampton Roads in Virginia, the large natural harbour where the James and Elizabeth Rivers meet the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. The area saw the famous clash of the ironclads Monitor and Virginia in 1862.
Norfolk is home to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world, and the surrounding port handles containers, coal exports and general cargo, with major shipyards nearby. Sailors entering from the Atlantic cross the line of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and usually see warships, including aircraft carriers, berthed along the waterfront.
