The harbour
Boston lies on Boston Harbor at the western edge of Massachusetts Bay, where the Charles and Mystic rivers meet the sea.
One of the oldest ports in the United States, it was central to the colonial era and the scene of the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Today it handles containers, fuel and liquefied natural gas, cars and cruise passengers, and keeps an active fish pier.
The frigate USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat, is berthed at the former Charlestown Navy Yard. Entering the harbour, a sailor threads between the many small Boston Harbor Islands.
