The harbour
Charleston, South Carolina, stands on a peninsula where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet to form a natural harbour opening onto the Atlantic. Founded in the seventeenth century, it was one of the wealthiest ports of colonial America, and its old town is known for its preserved houses and churches.
The port handles containers, vehicles from nearby car plants and other manufactured goods. The American Civil War began here in 1861 with the bombardment of Fort Sumter, which still stands on an island at the harbour entrance. Ships heading upriver pass beneath the tall cable-stayed Ravenel Bridge across the Cooper River.
