The harbour
Miami lies on Biscayne Bay on the southeast coast of Florida, sheltered from the Atlantic by a chain of barrier islands including Miami Beach.
PortMiami, on Dodge Island in the bay, is often called the cruise capital of the world and handles very large numbers of cruise passengers, as well as containers, much of it trade with Latin America and the Caribbean. Ships reach it through Government Cut, a channel dug through the barrier island.
Just offshore runs the Gulf Stream, a strong northward current that every sailor must allow for. The city skyline rises directly beside the port.
