The harbour
Nassau, capital of The Bahamas, sits on the north shore of New Providence island, its harbour sheltered by Paradise Island just offshore.
In the early eighteenth century it was a notorious pirate haven, used by figures such as Blackbeard, until the British restored control. Colonial forts still overlook the town. Today it is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean region, with several ships often berthed at Prince George Wharf at once, and tourism and banking dominate the economy.
A sailor notices the clear turquoise water and the shallow banks that make careful navigation essential.
