The harbour
Havana, the capital of Cuba, lies on the north coast of the island facing the Straits of Florida. Its deep, sheltered bay made it the assembly point for Spanish treasure fleets returning to Europe, and massive fortresses were built to defend it, including El Morro and La Cabaña.
Much container traffic has moved to the newer port of Mariel to the west, while Havana's harbour handles cruise ships, ferries and some cargo. Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ships enter through a narrow channel directly beneath the walls of El Morro, with the long Malecón seawall and city waterfront on the other side.
