The harbour
Belize City sits at the mouth of Haulover Creek on the Caribbean coast of Central America, behind the Belize Barrier Reef, one of the longest reef systems in the world.
It was the colonial capital of British Honduras and remained the capital until the government moved inland to Belmopan after hurricane damage. It is still the country's largest city and main cargo port, shipping sugar, citrus and bananas.
The surrounding waters are shallow, so large cruise ships anchor offshore and send passengers in by tender. A sailor must navigate carefully among the reefs, cays and sandbanks.
