The harbour
Puerto Limón is Costa Rica's main port on the Caribbean Sea, together with the nearby terminals at Moín. It handles most of the country's exports, especially bananas and pineapples, as well as containers of imported goods, and a large modern container terminal has been built at Moín.
Christopher Columbus anchored off this coast in 1502 on his fourth voyage, near the small island of Uvita just offshore. The province is known for its Afro-Caribbean culture and English-based Creole. Sailors approaching the port see Isla Uvita close to the harbour, with green coastal lowlands and rainforest behind the town.
