The harbour

Buenaventura is Colombia's main port on the Pacific Ocean, built largely on Cascajal Island in the Bay of Buenaventura. It handles most of the country's Pacific trade, including containers, imported grain and exports such as coffee and sugar from the Cauca Valley, and it is the sea outlet for the city of Cali.

The surrounding coast is covered with rainforest and mangroves, and the region is one of the wettest in the world. Sailors arriving here notice the near-constant heavy rain and the large tidal range, which exposes broad mud banks along the channels at low water.
