The harbour
Manta lies on the Pacific coast of Ecuador in Manabí province, near where the coast bulges westward toward the open ocean.
It is one of the main tuna fishing and processing centres in the Pacific, and its deepwater port also handles general cargo, vehicles and cruise ships. The nearby town of Montecristi is famous as the home of the finely woven straw hats known abroad as Panama hats.
A sailor entering Manta notices the large fleet of tuna purse-seiners at anchor and the busy beach where small fishing boats bring their catch ashore each morning.
