The harbour
Paita is a port on the dry northern coast of Peru, in the Piura region, set in a bay sheltered by a headland. It has served ships since Spanish colonial times and was a regular stop for whalers in the nineteenth century. Manuela Sáenz, the companion of Simón Bolívar, spent her last years here.
Today the port handles containers and exports from northern Peru, including mangoes, grapes and other fruit, fishmeal and fish products, and it is home to a large fishing fleet. Sailors notice the desert landscape surrounding the town, with almost no rain, and the abundant fishing grounds offshore.
