The harbour
Callao is Peru's chief seaport, on the Pacific coast directly beside Lima. It has served as the capital's port since Spanish colonial times, when silver and other goods were shipped from here, and the large Real Felipe fortress was built in the eighteenth century to defend it.
Today it handles most of Peru's container traffic, along with bulk cargo, fishmeal and fuel. The harbour is sheltered by San Lorenzo Island. Sailors notice the cold Humboldt Current, which brings rich fishing grounds, cool water and the grey coastal fog and overcast skies that hang over Lima for much of the year.
