The harbour
Antofagasta lies on the Pacific coast of northern Chile, at the edge of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. The city belonged to Bolivia until the War of the Pacific in the late nineteenth century, and under later treaties its port still handles cargo bound to and from landlocked Bolivia.
Mining drives the port: copper and other minerals from the desert interior are shipped out here, and supplies for the mines come in. North of the city stands La Portada, a natural sea arch. Sailors notice the bare brown coastal hills that rise straight behind the town, with almost no greenery or rain.
